An EMBA with EDHEC

Bruno Vasseur, admitted to EDHEC
By Anna Cianciara

Bruno Vasseur realized that completing an MBA at EDHEC would be his best opportunity to boost both his professional and personal development. Bruno found that EDHEC’s balance of professional and human interactions perfectly suited his aspirations and MBA vision. Find out more about EDHEC and EMBAs in the following interview with the MBA Center.

Could you start by telling us a little about yourself?

My name is Bruno Vasseur; I am 39 years old and married with four children living in Lambersart city, near Lille. My background is mainly technical (ICAM engineer), with 10 year of experience in team management. I am currently a project manager for Alstom Transport, in charge of leading the MF2000 Project for new RATP Metro designs and manufacturing a new generation of Paris metro lines.

So, why did you choose to do an MBA at this point in your life?

Everything was okay with my job, but I realized that I wasn’t really making any additional professional progress. Moreover, I realized that I would not have the opportunity to develop experiences in the areas where I knew I was lacking if I remained in the same position. At this stage of my carrier, I have realized that a technical background and management experience won’t be sufficient to tackle complex management problems which require skills in key areas like corporate strategy, operations, finance, managerial economics, and marketing. I wanted to be in position to participate actively in my company’s strategic decisions and development. In short, it was time for me to prepare for the next step!

What were your reasons for choosing EDHEC?

First of all, EDHEC’s outstanding reputation and the fact that they are accredited by the three MBA accreditation organizations – EQUIS, AMBA, and AACSB – were both extremely important criteria in my decision. I remember that I was also particularly attracted by the international dimension of the EMBA program (instruction is in English and includes three one-week seminars abroad). But my main reason for choosing EDHEC was the feeling I had after the interviews with EMBA students. I had the strong impression that they found all what they were looking for at EDHEC! Their satisfaction was the best guarantee for me.

How would you describe the learning environment at EDHEC?

The learning environment at EDHEC offers a combination of two qualities: professional and human. From the professional perspective, all the students are mature professionals, with their real-world experiences giving them a broad base from which they can easily contribute to a class. The fact that this program combines professionals from many different sectors and walks of life leads to more interesting and productive discussions, directly in touch with the reality of business today. In such conditions, the participants can get practical and applied uses for the skills they learn. As for the human side, the first seminar of the program is dedicated to team building and experience sharing. This first stage forms the basis for atmosphere of the rest of the course with direct impact on the future team contributions and final performance. It is important to note that the smaller class size (about 20 students per class) is one of the key attributes of the program. This facilitates efficient communication and exchanges during intensive team work, and ensures that the instructional and administrative staff can be contacted easily, giving students the attention they require.

What was the most interesting aspect of your experience at EDHEC?

Globally, I particularly appreciated the right balance between academic courses and seminars. For instance, I have been particularly interested in the Strategic Marketing approach. The seminar consists mainly of a business strategy game which allows participants to deal with key aspects of strategic market development options.

The program also provided an opportunity “to take a breath,” meaning, to distance myself both physically and mentally from the everyday work environment. This was useful in establishing a better perception of my work context, competencies and achievements, and to let important technical, intellectual, and affective criteria emerge. I now have a better understanding of myself, and I think this is an essential part of the MBA process!

Why should other MBA applicants choose EDHEC?

Of course I’d recommend the EMBA program at EDHEC. It should be seen as a real opportunity to get a different perspective on business differently. An MBA works somewhat like an eye-opener which will widen your professional horizons. Keep in mind that the EMBA process is a real transformation in preparing for the future. This change must be managed properly, step by step. EDHEC provides the coaching necessary to make it successful through tailored tutorial and individual exercises. In the end, I appreciate the EDHEC EMBA program not only for the quality of the training they offer, but also for the human experience provided individually or collectively. I firmly believe that this “human dimension” makes the difference!
